Traditional Nepali Measurement Converter: Pathi, Tola & Dharni to Kg
While modern supermarkets and malls in Nepal use the metric system (Kilograms and Liters), traditional Nepali measurements are still strictly followed in everyday life. If you are buying gold in New Road, purchasing bulk rice from a wholesale mill, or buying meat during Dashain, you will be quoted in Tola, Pathi, and Dharni.
Because these traditional units do not translate perfectly to flat metric numbers, younger generations and urban residents often struggle to figure out exactly how much they are paying for. We built this Traditional Nepali Measurement Converter to give you instant, mathematically perfect conversions between Nepal’s historic mass and volume scales and modern Metric units.
1. Gold & Silver Measurements (Jewelry)
If you visit any jewelry shop in Nepal, the prices are always displayed “Per Tola”. The jewelry scale is hyper-specific:
- 1 Tola = 11.66 grams
- 1 Aana = 0.729 grams (16 Aana make 1 Tola)
- 1 Lal = 0.116 grams (100 Lal makes 1 Tola)
Pro-Tip: If a jeweler quotes you a price for a ring that weighs “1.5 Tola”, you can type 1.5 In the Tola box above to instantly see that you are buying exactly 17.49 grams of gold.
2. Grains & Liquids (Volumetric Measurements)
These measurements are primarily used for agricultural goods like rice, lentils (dal), mustard oil, and ghee. It is important to note that Mana and Pathi measure Volume (space), not Weight (mass).
- 1 Pathi = 4.545 Liters (8 Mana makes 1 Pathi)
- 1 Mana = 0.568 Liters (10 Muthi makes 1 Mana)
- 1 Muri = 90.91 Liters (20 Pathi makes 1 Muri)
The Weight Confusion: Because Pathi is a measure of volume, “1 Pathi of Rice” will weigh differently than “1 Pathi of Popcorn”. However, as a general rule of thumb in Nepal, 1 Pathi of Rice is roughly equivalent to 4 Kilograms.
3. Traditional Mass Measurements (Meat & Vegetables)
Used primarily in local vegetable markets and by butchers during festivals:
- 1 Dharni = 2.393 Kilograms
- 1 Bisauli = 1.196 Kilograms (Half a Dharni)
- 1 Traditional Pau = 199.45 Grams (12 Pau makes 1 Dharni)
The “Pau” Warning: There is a common discrepancy in local vegetable markets regarding the “Pau”. Historically, 1 Pau is exactly 199.45 grams. However, modern vegetable vendors have adapted a “Metric Pau”, which they treat as exactly 250 grams (1/4th of a Kilogram). Always clarify with your vendor if they are using a traditional scale or a metric scale!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
In Nepal, 1 Tola of gold or silver is officially equivalent to exactly 11.6638 grams.
Because Pathi is a measurement of volume (like a liter jug) and not weight, the kilogram equivalent depends on what you put inside it. However, as a standard average, 1 Pathi of white rice weighs approximately 4 Kilograms.
Dharni is a traditional Nepali measurement of mass that is heavier than a Kilogram. Exactly 1 Dharni equals 2.3934 Kilograms. It is most commonly used when buying large quantities of meat during festivals like Dashain.
There are exactly 8 Mana in 1 Pathi. If you break it down further, there are 10 Muthi (handfuls) in 1 Mana, meaning there are 80 Muthi in 1 Pathi.
